It’s really important for those of us who own businesses to be seen as someone who does what we say. The best way of doing that is by walking your talk.
The problem with doing this is it’s often hard and inconvenient. When we do so we might even feel like a failure and often we’ll feel guilty.
It’s really important for those of us who own businesses to be seen as someone who does what we say. The best way of doing that is by walking your talk. By walking your talk what it means very simply is, I do what I say and I’m consistent about doing what I say.
The problem with doing this, it’s often hard and inconvenient. When we do so, we might even feel like a failure and often we might even feel guilty.
For me learning to walk my talk is a process, it continues to be a process. Is not something I learned overnight and I doubt it’s gonna be something for you either.
I know how frustrating is when those you work with don’t believe what you say. I’ve been there and I’ve had some horrible learning experiences along the way. One of my core values today is personal responsibility but it wasn’t always that way. When I first started off in business, I would yell at somebody every single day, demean them, call them idiots and the truth is what I was doing, I was moving blame off me to somebody else by either justifying my actions or blaming somebody else for why things went wrong. And I could be talking about personal responsibility to the cows came home but I wasn’t walking my talk so nobody ever took me seriously. And I’m hoping you don’t have to have the pain I went through to go past the blaming and justifying part of my business career to actually taking responsibility and walking my talk and I have to tell you, it was a process of four or five years before I finally got there and I’m there about, 98, 99% of the time. I don’t think any of us in core values were there, a 100% the time but 98, 99%, 97% that’s a core value.
So to move from telling and not showing how to walk your talk, you’re gonna wanna do three things.
- Number one, you’re gonna wanna gain awareness of what you do isn’t always what you say you’re going to do. Now, when things go wrong, you have to look in the mirrors what that means. When you say you’re gonna do something and you don’t actually end up doing it, you lose a tremendous amount of credibility and trust with people, the trust formula, one of the major factors is reliability. And when you don’t walk your talk, you don’t do what you’re saying, you move down the reliability scale which means people trust you less.
- Number two, when we do fall and we’re always gonna fall back and we fall back occasionally, we want to apologize to others. Now, this shows emotional intelligence and the ability to look inwards. Now, it’s really important to look at the mirror and tell yourself the truth about how you’re behaving and how it’s reacting to others. And if you happen to get feedback like I did recently about how your language is negatively affecting others, you have to sit there and say, instead of doing what I did an issue of saying, that’s not true. And we all do that, is that when somebody gives us negative feedback we often will say, that’s not true. But then we had to sit back and ask some other folks and look inward to say, Gee, is this something that I did or is this something that they’re misinterpreting? Which means it’s something that I did because the truth is the meaning of your communication is way it’s received not the way you meant to say it.
- So number three, be gentle on yourself when you do fall back and learn from the mistake. Too often we don’t want to take that look in the mirror ’cause we see it as being too painful we have to look in the mirror and see if what we did was our fault after all. And one of my favorite scenes is from a guy named Buckminster Fuller. Bucky Fuller was a great philosopher, a mathematician invented the geodesic dome and a zillion other things but he did a great scene, I really loved. And it is, you don’t learn less. So when you make a mistake, you’re gonna learn from it and you’re not learning less and learning more about how you need to behave when you’re working with others.
This is something that I’ve had a hard time within my life. Part of it is my personality of being a bull in a China shop and some of it is because I’m just not thinking about others in the example I’m setting. It’s something that you need to be thinking when you’re a leader, your owner of a company, people follow what you do, not what you say. So if you wanna have people be consistent or you wanna be consistent with people following your instructions, you don’t have to just say what you want to do, you have to exhibit that through your own actions.
