Do You Love What You Do? If Not, Why Not?

July 2, 2018 by JoshPatrick Leave a Comment

“Do what you love in the service of people who love what you do.”  That’s the mantra for today’s video.

Steve Farber is one of my favorite authors and people.  His book, The Radical Leap is where the above quote comes from.  In today’s video, I talk about what this means and how you can apply it to your business.  Watch the video and then let me know what you think after.

Transcript:

Okay, today we’re gonna talk about a seminar I was recently at inspiring my friend Steve Farber, and it was around his book, the radical Leap. Radical leap is a book I highly recommend to everyone read and what leap stands for is love, energy, audacity, and proof. So what is Steve’s statements, which I think is just a really, really important statement is

Do what you love in the service of people who love what you in the service who love what you do.

The Radical Leap by Steve Farber

I want to say that again. Do what you love in the service of people who love what you do. So let’s unpack this a little bit and let’s start out with do what you love. So when we start with doing what you love, that means having a business that you love, providing services that you love, that you think provide really high value of value for the people who you serve.

The second part of this is find people who love what you do

If you’re doing what you love and you’re doing it in the service of people who love what you do, you’re going to have a business that is very successful. And B, you’re gonna really enjoy working with the people you work with. Now, this is especially true if your business is one that you provide the direct service for. So if you’re providing service for your customers as not something that you absolutely love what you’re doing, don’t you think they’re going to figure that out? Don’t you think that they’re going to say, well, that’s okay, but it’s not what I really, really want? So we’ve done some sessions on values and what are your values and that’s a good place to start to sort of figuring out is what you love fitting in with what your value system is.

And if the two don’t go together well, there is a really good chance you’re not going to love what you do very much. Now the other part is doing it in service of people who love what you do. For me, that’s all around culture niche learning to say no and what clarity is. So culture really is, again, the values is another word for values.

Culture is the manifestation of what your values are.

Niche is being really clear about who the people are that love what you do now, that niche not only wants to be demographically, which is what most people do when they think about a niche, they think about somebody who is 50 years old, makes a certain amount of money, might work in a certain industry that’s not a niche, that’s a market segment on niches where you also add the psychographic element to that, and the psychographic element is basically what makes that person into the person they are.

What are their belief systems? Are there values compatible with your values? If the answer is no, then you have to learn how to say no, and what does that lead to? That leads to clarity and clarity is really about knowing exactly who those people are who love what you do. So here’s what I want you to do. I want you to take out a piece of paper and

I want you to write down why is it that you love what you do

I want you to write why and continue writing why at least five times, and you drilled down on each of those whys until you get to a core reason of doing what it is that you do and why you do it, in. What about that helps you, uh, what you do in the service of people who love what you do.

And then I want you to write down the five people who fit in to that, love what you do the most, and then look at those people and try to figure out what their values are, who they are as people, what makes them, what they are, and why do you enjoy working with them so much Once you figured that out, now you’re going to have a clear idea of who you need to serve in the way you want to say. Hey, my name is Josh Patrick. I’m the founder here at the sustainable business and I really appreciate you spending a few minutes with me wanting to stop back here really soon. Oh, by the way, leave a comment below what you think about this video and what do you think about the radical leap, which again stands for love, energy, audacity, and proof.
