Projects are funny things. You would think that all you need to do is identify the project and then start working on it.
There’s no doubt that you could do that. At the same time it might not be the way for you to get the best results. Here are some ideas that you might want to consider.
Start with a story about what you want to do.
If you take your project and make it into a story you’re going to make it easier for those who you want to be involved to understand what you’re trying to do. Let’s face it, we all like stories and if you can build one around your new project it’ll be easier for everyone to understand what it is you’re trying to do.
You might even want to make your story fictional. It’s easier for us to think about things that we could be doing if we don’t think we actually have to do it. And this is one of the main reasons we want to start with the story talking about what it is we want to do. Especially if the project happens to be a difficult one.
Put some color around the story with a strong and compelling why.
What you want your project to be with a story is a great place to start. At the same time the what is not going to get people especially excited about joining you in your quest.
You need to put some color around your story and the best way to do this is by figuring out what the why is which simply means why somebody including you would want to do this. In my experience, having a strong why is what motivates people to go the extra mile, work a little harder and be a little smarter about the project you’re about to start.
Identify who the main actors are in your story.
While you’re crafting your story make sure you include who the characters are going to be. Again, I strongly suggest you make this into a fictional story with fictional characters. When you do this you are likely to get less pushback from those you need to help with the project.
Because you have a fictional story you’re really talking about the roles that you need for your project. After your people get excited about what you’re trying to do then you can fill in the roles with the names of the real people who are going to help make your project come to fruition.
End your story with how you’re going to do it.
The last step in your story will be the how. Too often we make how the second step in a project planning process. In my experience, having how be last allows those who are involved to know what you’re trying to do, why it’s important and who the players need to be.
When you get right down to it once you identify the first three pieces the rest is easy.
