When I started doing our survey about what keeps you up at night one of the questions I was asked is what if I’m not taking advantage my full potential. I think that at some point we all don’t take advantage of our full potential.
At the same time, there are things we probably should be doing. Here are some mistakes I make when I feel like I’m not working at a level I should be.
Take stock of my own personal values.
If you’re concerned about not working up to your own potential, you might want to start by taking a look at what your own personal values are.
What, you say? You haven’t identified your personal values. Well, that’s where you want to start. Until you know what your own values are how is it possible for you to understand what you need to be doing to work to your full potential?
Think about what your own personal passion is.
Next, write down the 10 things that excite you more than anything else you possibly can do. Now, I want you to ask yourself how many of these things do I do on a weekly basis.
If the answer isn’t at least 75% per week, then you’re probably spending your time doing the wrong things. This is not an easy thing to fix. An awful lot of things that we do are things that are just baked into our week. If you want to make this change and start doing things you have passion about you’re going to have to start interrupting patterns that you’ve had for a very long time.
You might want to make a checklist that has the 10 passions you have and check off the date when you get to pursue them. What do you think, could that be a good start?
Are you in an environment that supports you doing the best you can?
If you’re an employee, does your employment situation support what you have personal passion around? If not, it just might be time for you to look for something else to do.
If you own your own business, then it’s all up to you. All you have to do is understand what your personal values are and then work on integrating your personal values as part of your company’s mission, vision and core values that exist in your organization.
Are you being congruent in what you value?
Too often I see people say they have one type of value system and then when you watch what they do it appears those values have no place in their life. I call that walking your talk.
If you’re not walking your talk, then you have a choice:
- You can change what you’re doing and make sure that your actions are consistent with your values.
- You can keep on doing what you’re doing and realize that what you think are core values and passions are not really yours.
Making changes is not easy. If you want to make sure you’re living your values you’re going to have to change how you spend your time and change what you spend your time doing.
If you own your own business, there really is no excuse.
For those of you who own your own business it’s really pretty easy to make sure you’re living your passion. Just find a way where your company, your values and your passions line up.
