Too often I see people like us confuse purpose, actions and results. The problem with this is actions are not results and purpose is not results. Results are always a result of the actions we take. And, results are never the purpose for what we do something.
I’m going to bet the statements I just made are confusing. They were to me when I started thinking about them. The purpose of today’s video is to examine purpose, actions and results and how they’re different.
Too often I see business owners like us confuse purpose, actions, and results. The problem with this is actions are not results, and purpose is not results. Results always happen from the actions that we take, and results are never the purpose for why we do something or what we’re doing.
You know, I’m gonna bet the statements I just made are really confusing. They were to me when I started thinking about them. And to the purpose of today’s video is to examine a purpose, actions, and results, and how they’re different, and how they can benefit you by knowing what the difference is.
So let’s jump right in.
- Number one, let’s start with the easy one. Results never happen unless we take action.
- I talk a lot with mindset people on my podcast, and I always ask them this question; what’s more important, the action or the mindset? Well, if you don’t take actions, you’re never gonna get results no matter what your mindset is. So you gotta start with an action if you ever wanna get a result. But before you take those actions, you wanna know what the result is. You know, I might want a great profit to my business, but this is not gonna happen unless I take specific actions to make it happen.
- Now, I know this sounds logical, and too often I see people think about something, and think that will get them to a result. Just because you’re thinking about something and your mindset is something, unless you’re taking actions, there’s no way that you’re ever gonna get a result that you want.
- So is this the problem with mindset. We often think it therefore it is. That is never true. Unless we take action, results just won’t come.
- So let’s go with number two. Let’s take a look at purpose.
- You know, purpose is a reason your business exists.
- The purpose of a business is not to make a profit.
- For most businesses, and I would almost say all businesses, the purpose of a business is to create a customer.
- The action is create a customer who pays you money, enough money, that your business is profitable, and the result is a profit.
- So the purpose is to create a customer, the action is to create the customer who pays you enough money, and the result is profit. Are you starting to get the sense for how this might all work together?
- Now, let’s finish up with looking at actions.
- Actions can lead to result. For example, having a profit.
- Actions can lead nowhere. Hiring the wrong person for your company is an action, but it’s not an action you might wanna make. So instead if you have a purpose and you understand what the result is, the type of person you’re trying to hire, you’re gonna take more effective and more efficient actions.
- Without purpose, your actions may or may not get you to where you wanna go. In fact, they’re not likely to get you to where you wanna go because you don’t have a purpose, you don’t know what your actions are trying to lead towards. You have be really specific in what your actions are gonna do, and you want your actions to be small experiments. Don’t plan and plan and plan and plan and plan before you can take an action. Think about where you wanna go, know what your purpose is, take a small action. That’s how you’re gonna get there really effectively and efficiently.
- You know, purpose gives you the direction and the guide to actions you should be taking. And this is something I really want you to focus on. Understanding your purpose, spending time thinking about your purpose, and really understanding what the purpose is you’re trying to get to, we’ll really start saying, okay, these are the actions that will or will not get there. You know, I call this the how. When I’m doing a planning process, we start off with what we wanna do, why you wanna get there, go back to re-look at what you wanna do, and then we wanna know who’s gonna help us, but we always have to get down to the how. And the action is the how, but the purpose is what gets you to the how.
- You know, often businesses have actions that don’t lead them anywhere. An example is selling to the wrong customer in a one-off situation. If I do one thing for you and another thing for you and another thing for you, those are all actions. But they’re probably not gonna lead me to a place I wanna be. So if you’re taking actions, again, we wanna make sure it fits in with our purpose.
- I have a question for you. How often do you investigate the actions your company is taking? How often do you analyze whether they are purpose-driven and lead to a result they want? If you aren’t doing that, you’re leaving a lot of money on the table, you’re causing yourself a lot more frustration than you need to, and you’re just not getting to where you wanna go.
So it’s time for you to start with purpose, and then make sure the actions and projects your company takes, lead you to where you wanna go. Are you willing to do this?
